Glossary

Terms used across the NeoTechX site, from telecontrol protocols to BC Hydro and FortisBC billing.

Automate, with sign-off
The third step of NeoShift: automatic supervisory setpoints within agreed limits, only after the customer signs off a written plan.
Billing demand
The demand a tariff bills on; for BC Hydro Medium and Large General Service, the highest kW in the billing period; for FortisBC Commercial and Large Commercial Service, the greatest of the current peak, 75% of the highest demand in the previous 11 months and 25% of contract demand.
DNP3
Distributed Network Protocol, a telecontrol protocol common in North American water, wastewater and energy systems; unencrypted unless secured with TLS and IEC 62351-5.
Gateway
A device or software that connects field equipment to control and IT systems, often converting between protocols.
IEC 60870-5-104
Telecontrol protocol over TCP/IP, often called IEC 104; unencrypted unless secured with TLS and IEC 62351-5.
IEC 62351-5
Secure authentication for IEC 60870-5 protocols and DNP3.
Minimum charge
BC Hydro Medium and Large General Service floor: 50% of the highest winter demand charge of the preceding 11 periods.
Peak shaving
Lowering the highest demand interval in a billing period, for example by sequencing equipment so loads do not coincide.
Ratchet
A billing-demand floor set by a past peak; applies to FortisBC Commercial and Large Commercial Service (75% over 11 months) and to BC Hydro transmission service, not BC Hydro general service.
RTU
Remote terminal unit: collects field data and executes commands for a control centre.
SCADA
Supervisory control and data acquisition: software that monitors and controls distributed equipment.
Free Demand Assessment
The first step: a read-only review of a site's bills and interval data that shows what drives its peak demand, with no software fees and no obligation.
Shared savings
A fee calculated as a share of verified savings.
